Andreas Herzog is to become an assistant to United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann, the Austrian Football Association (OFB) have confirmed.

Herzog, who made a record 103 appearances for Austria as a player, had been coaching his country's Under-21 team but the OFB said in a statement he had now accepted an offer to become Klinsmann's right-hand man.

The OFB statement read: "Under-21 team manager Andreas Herzog is to leave the OFB.

"Herzog informed OFB president Leo Windtner, general director Alfred Ludwig and sports director Willi Ruttensteiner that he had been made an offer to be an assistant coach to the US national team."

Herzog said: "I have had a close friendship with Jurgen Klinsmann for years and I am going to take on my new job with great confidence.

"I want to thank the OFB, not only for the complication-free resolution of my previous agreement, but also for the opportunity to gain experience in recent years with the A and under-21 national teams."

Windtner added: "For Andreas Herzog, this is a unique opportunity to present himself as a coach on the international stage. Therefore, the OFB will put no obstacles in the way, although we regret his departure and thank him for his work in recent years. We wish Andreas every success in his new job and in January next year we will decide on his successor."
